Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
23 years
What is your primary product or service?
Investment Counseling and management.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I grew up around the industry. My grandfather and my uncle both had their own brokerage firms when I was growing up. I Started out as an investment adviser (stockbroker) in 1987 with PaineWebber and worked at Shearson Lehman Hutton as well. I decided it was better to give advice without getting paid by the investment recommendation (broker), so I went into the money management business and my pay was based solely on the assets that I manage and not by commissions. In the early 1990's, at 31 years old, I believe I was the youngest sole principal of a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the Grand Rapids area. As a fiduciary, my clients interests must come ahead of mine, something that wasn't true as a stockbroker on commision. Most people don't know the difference. I always tried to put the clients interest first as a stockbroker, but I found the industry wasn't "built" for that. The result was VerMeulen Capital Management and the beginning of what has turned into the great wave of growth in the investment industry- fee based only fiduciary investment management, where we are obligated to put the clients interests first and compensation is based only on the assets managed and never by a commissioned product.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
